There are close to one hundred programs that have been implemented at major sporting events around the world over the past twenty years. Many of the programs noted under the Olympic Program Team will also impact much of London. There are however a number of programs that will have a much larger impact in London then in other U.K. cities and towns. The following listing of programs represents a selection of those programs and it is anticipated that as the Teams start to meet other ideas will start to immerge. These programs will therefore serve as a beginning point to engage representatives from the denominations and agencies for the purposes of impacting London.
The Hospitality Team will coordinate a variety of programs aimed at using hospitality as means of service and outreach to visitors and locals alike. Hospitality Centers and Welcome Kits are just a few of the programs being developed by the WG to give local Christians the opportunity to serve through hospitality during the Games.
The Social Action Team will focus on involving local Churches in existing initiatives and possible new initiatives that give emphasis to assisting the homeless and those involved in preventing sex trafficking. They will also encourage churches to be environmentally conscious by promoting an awareness program at the local Church level.
During previous games local Churches have staged open crowd festivals that have attracted thousands of people and sports fans to watch the opening ceremony or a specific game on a big screen. These open crowd festivals have not only brought communities together but they have built social capital and have a history of building transforming movements. The focus of this Team will be to train and demonstrate to Churches how implementing festivals leading up to, during and beyond the Games can bring communities together and have lasting impact for the Kingdom. One major training opportunity for the development of this program will be the 2010 World Cup. With matches occurring in Africa occurring in approximately the same time zone this will provide a great opportunity for Churches to stage Big Screen Festivals next year and expand the operation for 2012.
