Sports Tournaments

Football spectatorsRunning a sports tournament is a great way for a church or group of churches to build relationships and help generate a sense of community.

A day-long tournament can cover –

  • A collection of sports – even a ‘mini-olympics’
  • Individual sports such as tennis, squash, badminton or golf
  • Team sports such as football, basketball or touch rugby
  • Full cricket or football matches
  • A traditional school sports day – but for all ages

What’s the best way?

If a church is to run a Sports Tournament it is worth doing it well. Think about –

  • Creating a handicap system so even the losers can ‘win’
  • Have a prize-giving ceremony with lots of panache and prizes for worst and best
  • Having a concluding meal with a guest speaker
  • Letting the local media know
  • Have the next step in mind - with invitations to hand out

What help is available?
